Is there a procedure to cancel marriage registration?

A marriage certificate is a legal record that certifies the marriage bond of a bride and bridegroom. The concerned State Government is empowered to issue marriage certificates in every State of India. A marriage certificate is a document that declares two people married legally. Marriages in India are to be registered under the Hindu Marriage act, 1955 or the Special Marriage Act, 1954. In the year 2006, the Honorable Supreme Court made it mandatory in India to get a marriage registered to legalize it.

Arya Samaj marriage is just like Hindu marriage, where the marriage takes place around the fire. Also, it is legally recognised. In fact, there is the Arya Samaj Marriage Validation Act of 1937 provided under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.

A marriage certificate cannot be revoked or cancelled under any circumstances. There is no provision to cancel a marriage certificate and you can revoke a marriage registration only through the mode of divorce. The appropriate remedy for you will be to get married again by following all the Hindu rituals.

ItÕs important to note that an Arya Samaj marriage certificate is not a valid proof of the coupleÕs marriage abroad. The certificate holds value only in India. This can, however, be easily solved by registering the marriage with the sub registrarÕs office.
